Namgyal Monastery is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery involved with the Dalai Lamas. It is visited by thousands of pilgrims each and every year.
About Namgyal Monastery
Third Dalai Lama Sonam Gyatso was established Namgyal Monastery in year 1575. During that time, it was located at the Potala Palace in Tibet.But it transferred to Dharamshala, India in year 1959. It is also known as 'Namgyal Dratsang', which means 'Victorious Monastery'. Namgyal Monastery is distinctive in itself, in Namgyal monks conducted the all types of prayers and rituals. Major schools of Tibetan Buddhism diverse forms practiced. The main tantric practices carried out here are Yamantaka, Kalachakra, Guhyasamaja, Chakrasamvara and Vajrakilaya.
In this monastery there is "nearly 200" monks that representing all four Tibetan monastic lineage. Young monks come here to study and master the major texts of Buddhist Sutra and Tantra. You can also visit its cafe, bookshop and guesthouse, situated next to the Tsuglag Khang.
Kushinagar in India the monastery established a temple in year 1967. In 1992 the Dalai Lama advised the monastery management to establish an American branch in Ithaca, New York for the benefit of the followers there.
