Manali Attraction - Hadimba Devi Temple
Hadimba Devi temple is an important place to visit in Manali. It is an ancient temple situated in Manali. It is also known as Dhoongri Temple. It is surrounded by a cedar forest at the foot of the Himālayas This temple is dedicated to the Hadimba (or Hirimba), the wife of Bhima, one of the Pandava brothers. The temple has a pagoda shaped roof. This four story wooden temple is located in the middle of a forest called the Dhungiri Van Vihar.
History Hadimba Devi Temple
In ancient time there was a demon Hadimb who ruled the mountains and was feared by all and Goddess Hadimba was him sister. Bhim, one of the Pandava brothers was married Hadimba and stayed togather for a year. She gave birth to his son and name of this baby was Ghatotkacha and she went into isolation and meditated. Hadimba choose that place for meditation was Dhungiri. So that in year 1553 this temple was built and dedicated to Goddess Hadimba
Raja Bahadur Singh was constructed the temple in Pagoda style. The wooden four-storey structure is also known as the Dhungri Temple. In the memory of Raja Bahadur Singh there is a fair is held on the first of Savan (In month of July-August) every year. This fair is known as the Bahadur Singh Re Jatar.
Temple Design
The tower of Hadimba Devi Temple has 24 meters high. Hidimbi Devi Temple carved with wooden doors. Tower or "shikhar" of this temple is covered with 3 square roofs timber tiles and a fourth roof has a cone-shaped and made of brass on the top.Front door of this temple is decorated to figures and symbols. Floor and walls of this temple is made out of mud-covered stonework and whitewashed, which is decorated with miniature depictions of Goddess, animals, attendants and stylized foliation. In this templw there are four wooden pillars around the temple holding the temple. When you enter the temple it is towards the downstairs, where you find the Hadimba Maa.
Hadimba temple Manali is 500 years old temple and constructed in pagoda style and comprises no idol within, albeit, some footprints are engraved and are worshiped by devotees.
Hadimba Devi Temple is Famous For
This is famous for its architecture and a fair held every year in Hindi month of Sravan (July - August ) in the memory of Raja Bahadur Singh.This fair or Mela is also called as "Saroohni", which is symbolic of the completion of the transplanting of paddy. It is also famous for celebration of birthday of Hadimba Devi which is held on 14th May each year.
