About City Palace

City Palace is the famous tourist attraction of Udaipur and it has the several palaces within its complex. Maharana Udai Singh was built this palace as the capital of the Sisodia Rajput clan in year 1559. City Palace is the fusion of the Rajasthani and Mughal architectural styles. Balconies of the City Palace provide the panoramic views of "Jag Niwas" (the Lake Palace Hotel), Jag Mandir on one side and the city of Udaipur on the other side.

Structures of City Palace

The entry to the City Palace is from the Hati Pol, the Elephant gate. Main entrance of this palace is 'Bara Pol' that leads to the Tripola, which was built in 1725. Main Entry Point of This palace is Hati Pol or Elephant Gate and The Bari Pol or Big Gate leads up to Tripolia or the Triple Gate. The window that was used by Maharanas is known as Suraj Gokhda. This Window is used for the interact and motivate the public during any crisis times.

City Palace displays a fine mixture of Medieval, European and Chinese Architecture built in granite and marble. This Palace has an excellent assortment of courtyards, terraces, pavilions, corridors, rooms and hanging gardens.

Main Structures of City Palace

Badi Mahal : Badi Mahal is also known as Garden Palace and is the exotic central garden palace that is situated on a 27 metres (89 ft) high natural rock formation bis-a-bis the rest of the palace

Chini Chitrashala : Chini Chitrashala is section of the city palace complex that is adorned with Chinese and Dutch ornamental tiles.

Bhim Vilas : Bhim Vilas has a gallery of a remarkable collection of miniature paintings that depict the real life stories of Radha-Krishna

Dilkhusha Mahal : In year 1620 Dilkhusha Mahal was buit and it was also known as ‘Palace of Joy’

Manak Mahal or the Ruby Palace : It comprises of forms and figures made of crystal and porcelain.

Rang Bhawan : In this palace there are temples of Lord Krishna, Meera Bai and Shiva.

Laxmi Vilas chowk : It is an art gallery with a distinctive collection of Mewar paintings

Sheesh Mahal : In year 1716, Sheess Mahal or Palace of Mirrors and glasses was built.

Krishna Vilas : Krishna Vilas displays exceptional miniature paintings narrating the stories of Radha-Krishna.

Zenana Mahal : Zenana Mahal was used by the Royal Ladies. But now this Chamber turned into museum along with other parts of the City palace. This part of the museum exhibits impelling paintings.

Jagdish mandir : Jagdish mandir was built in 1652 and it is a example of Indo-Aryan architectural style. It is a large and aesthetically elegant temple where an idol of Lord Jagannath, a form of Lord Vishnu made in black stone is deified in the sanctum.

Choti Chitrashali : It was built in early 19th century, has pictures of peacocks.

Moti Mahal or Pearl Palace : It was a late addition to the city palace complex.

Mor Chok : Mor Chok or Peacock square is integral to the inner courts of the palace.

Fateh Prakash Palace

The main part of the City palace is now preserved as a museum displaying a large and diverse array of artefacts. Down steps from the entrance is the armoury museum exhibiting a huge collection of protective gear, weapons including the lethal two-pronged sword.
