    Dehradun Attraction : Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple Dehradun

    Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple is one of the famous and old Temple in Dehradun. Tapkeshwar Mahadev temple is a very sacred and revered temple, which attracts a host of tourists and devotees.

    Location : Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple is located on the eastern bank of the river tons in the Garhi Cantonment area around 6.5 kms from the Dehradun city.

    About Temples:
    Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple is a cave temple and dedicated to Hindu Deity Lord Shiva.Tapkeshwar is a heavenly place along a seasonal rivulet in the dense forest valley where a large number of devotees throng mainly during the Shivratri. 

    The name of the temple has been derived from the Hindi word Tapak, which means "to drip". From the ceiling of the cave, Water naturally drips on the 'shivling' (holy stone). Hence, it was named as Tapkeshwar Temple. Tapkeshwar Mahadev temple houses two shivlingas. Both these shivlingas are not man made and have come into existence naturally. One shivlingas is known as Rudraksha Shivling.

    Around this temple you can also see the cool sulphur springs. These springs have therapeutic features. These springs are ideal points for tourists to take a dip while visiting the temple.

    Legend of this Temple
    It is believed that this temple dates back to the era of Mahabharata. During Dwaparyuga, this place was abode of Guru Dronacharya who lived here with his family. So that this cave is known as Drona Gufa.  According to legend, milk appeared from this cave owing to the powers of Lord Shiva.  Ashwathama, was born here, son of Rishi Dronacharya, needed this milk and it was due to Lord Shiva that the milk appeared. This mythical stories revolving around it has prosperous the temple with a sanctified aura.

    Main Attraction : A festival is held here every year. This festival is known as Tapkeshwar fair. During Shivratri festival, large number of devotees came here and visit this temple. The festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm and revelry.

    How to Reach : This temple is approachable from Dehradun by City Bus or three wheelers. This this temple is just 8 kms from ISBT and 5.5 kms from Railway Station.
