    Naini lake is a backbone of Nainital and it is a freshwater lake and which is one of the renowned tourist attraction of Nainital.

    About Naini Lake
    Naini lake is the heart and roc of the city with everything centring around it or in reference mark to it. The Shape of Naini Lake is lunar-shaped and has an outlet at the southeastern end. The name of nani lake is drived from the Nainital city. The lake is bordered by three mountain peaks - Naina peak on the north western front, Tiffin Top on the south western front and Snow view peaks on the northern front.

    Naini Lake is spread over 3.5kms and it is one of the most visited attractions in Nainital. In Kumaon hills there is 4 lakes and Nani Lake is one of them. Other three lakes are Sattal Lake, Bhimtal Lake and Naukuchiyatal Lake. According to historical records the lake was discovered in 1839, when Mr. P. Barron, a British businessman, came across this lake on a hunting expedition.

    Naini Lake divides Nainital into two divisions. The northern end of the Naini Lake is called Mallital, while the southern one is called Tallital. Both the ends are connected by a lake bridge. The bridge name is 'Danth'. There is also a Post Office that is built on a lake bridge. It also  having Gandhiji's statue. There is Bus Station , Taxi stand and Railway reservation counter on the same lake bridge.

    Many tourist stand on this bridge and enjoy the charming view of the city. Naini Lake forms an ideal location for families, honeymooners, adventure buffs and nature lovers who wish to enjoy the loveliness of the lake and Nainital to the fullest.

    Mythological stories About Naini Lake
    Earlier Naini Lake is knonw as ‘Tri-Rishi-Sarovar’ that mean is 'the lake of the three sages' and the name of the sages are Atri, Pulastya and Pulaha. During its pilgrimage they did not find water to drink. After that the sages dig the ground and worshipped there, for getting water at the spot. Some people believed that lake was formed out of the eye that fell out of Sati’s body when she was being taken back to Mount Kailash by a sad Lord Shiva. It is that place where her eye fell and formed a crescent shaped lake. Hence the name Naini lake.
