    Munnar Attractions : Eravikulam National Park Munnar

    Eravikulam National Park Munnar is a national park and one of the best tourist attraction of Munnar.

    Location : This park is located along the Western Ghats in the Idukki district of Kerala and just 15 km from Munna.



    About Eravikulam National Park 
    Eravikulam National Park is an ideality place for seeing the biodiversity of high altitude shola-grassland ecosystem. Eravikulam National Park is covers an area of 97 sq. km area. The department of Forests and Wildlife, Munnar Wildlife Division is maintained this park. This park was established to protect the Nilgiri Tahr, which is endangered specie of the wild goat found only to the south of the Himalayas. 

    In year 1975, this park was established but in year 1978 Eravikulam Sanctuary was declared as a National park. This park holds the largest viable population of the endangered (IUCN) Nilgiri Tahr (Hemitragus hylocrius). The sanctuary is divided into 3 zones- the core area, the buffer area and the tourism area


    Fauna : In this park Twenty six species of mammals have been recorded. Here you see the Indian Muntjac, Sambar Deer, Golden Jackal, Jungle Cat, Wild dog, Dhole, leopard and tiger. Here you also see the Stripe-necked Mongoose, Nilgiri Marten, Nilgiri langur, Ruddy Mongoose, Dusky palm squirrel  and mall clawed otter.  About 132 species of birds have been recorded which include endemics like Nilgiri Pipit, Black-and-orange Flycatcher, White Bellied Shortwing, Nilgiri Wood Pigeon, Nilgiri Verditer Flycatcher and Kerala Laughingthrush.

    Here 19 species of amphibians have been recorded.The park is also home to three species of lizards, four of snakes, and five of amphibians.

    Flora : The view of Eravikulam National Park is very charming. About 2000m area covered primarily by grasslands.Here are numerous small patches of forests and gullies in these areas

    Major attraction : Main wildlife attraction of this park are Nilgiri Tahr

    Best time to Visit : To get the more enjoy then the best time to see this park is in the early morning and evening. You see this park from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm. You can visit this park during September to November and April to  June. Entry into the park is prohibited during January-February which is the reproduction season and visitors are unaccredited during monsoons.
