Tabo Monastery is located at Tabo Villaged and 45 km from the town of Kaza. Tabo village is at an altitude of 3,280 metres, it is a remote place, with often harsh and extreme weather isolating it from the outside world.
About Tabo Monastery
Tabo Monastery is known as the ‘Ajanta of the Himalayas'. It is one of the oldest functioning Buddhist monastery and 996 AD it was established. This monastery is surrounded by a mud brick wall and has 9 temples, 4 decorated stupas and cave shrines contain paintings datable to, the 10th-11th centuries. Main Temple is "Tsug la Khang". This monastery has the 23 chortens, along with monks’ residence and a guest house for visitors.
The monastery is a houses of many Buddhist scriptures and documents, along with beautiful Buddhist statues and paintings.
