    About Viceregal Lodge
Viceregal Lodge was built in 1888 as the residence of Viceroy Lord Dufferin. The building is also termed as the 'Rashtrapati Niwas'.  Henry Irvine gave the contribution to design of this building. The architecture has the flavor of Scottish to its nook and corner. To construct Viceregal Lodge, only the local woods like pine and cedar were used. In this lodge there is a library and a baronial fire place. A grand staircase which springs from the right and spirals up three full floors marks the hall

Balconies of this lodge is provide the a spectacular and charming view of the Shimla mountain ranges covered in white snow.  In earlier time it was the important decision making center such as Shimla conference of 1945 or partitioning decision of India into Pakistan and Bangladesh.

It was only the summer retreat of the President of India after independence. In the early 60s the  Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and President of India Dr. S. Radhakrishnan decided to make it a Advanced Study so in 1965, Viceregal Lodge was converted in Indian Institute of Advanced Study.
